Course Information

The Group Fitness Instructor Course from the Swedish Academy of Sport Training (SAST) is a professional program designed to qualify participants to lead group fitness classes efficiently and safely. The course covers designing group training programs, various group exercises, movement coordination, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, and basic nutrition for trainees. It aims to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage group fitness sessions effectively, achieving optimal results while prioritizing participant safety and fostering team spirit. The course is suitable for anyone looking to develop their professional skills in fitness, with no prior experience required.

What You Will Learn

After completing this course, students will be able to:

  1. Perform aerobic training
  2. Teach aerobic exercises
  3. Conduct basic step exercises

Program Duration

Total program duration: 136 training hours, to be completed within a maximum of 3 months from the registration date.

Online Study – 92 Hours

  • Study the theoretical material from the scientific curriculum and course book.
  • Watch training videos and listen to lectures available on the Academy platform.
  • Complete periodic quizzes and the final theoretical exam through the Swedish Academy of Sport Training platform.

Practical Training – 40 Hours

  • Gain hands-on experience as a trainer in a fitness center.
  • Training is supervised by the Swedish Academy of Sport Training in cooperation with the student’s local fitness center management.

Final Practical Exam – 4 Hours

  • Includes preparation and execution of the final practical exam for the course.

Exams and Passing Criteria
The course exams are divided into theoretical and practical assessments. The exam structure and passing criteria are as follows:

1. Theoretical Exams

All theoretical exams at SAST are conducted online through the platform, with random questions from a bank based on the scientific course curriculum, with instant grading and results displayed immediately after completion.

Periodic Quizzes (Quiz)

Students must pass several mandatory quizzes before taking the final exam.

  1. Quizzes contain a maximum of 10 multiple-choice questions.
  2. Exam duration is one minute per question.
  3. Passing score: 80%.
  4. Quizzes can be retaken unlimited times.
  5. The final theoretical exam cannot be attempted until all quizzes are successfully completed.

Final Theoretical Exam

  1. Students can take the final exam after passing all mandatory quizzes.
  2. A passing score of 60% is required.
  3. The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions with four options each.
  4. Exam duration: 50 minutes.
  5. Students may attempt the exam twice.
  6. Additional attempts can be requested for $50 per attempt if both attempts are unsuccessful.
  7. The final practical exam cannot be taken unless the final theoretical exam is passed.

2. Practical Training Assessment

  1. 40 hours of practical training in a fitness center as a group instructor, assisting or leading sessions under supervision.
  2. Completion requires submitting two signed and stamped forms: the Training Approval Form and the Performance Evaluation Form.
  3. The final practical exam cannot be attempted until the practical training is successfully completed.

3. Final Practical Exam

  1. Includes a variety of training scenarios; one is randomly selected for the student.
  2. The scenario is provided at the start of the exam in the platform’s exam section.
  3. The exam is conducted in a fitness center for 30 minutes.

Exam Execution

  1. Designing the Group Training Program: Students must design a single group training session (choreography) with at least 10 sequential exercises, performed in a coherent sequence with appropriate music, considering intensity and rhythm progression.The program must detail correct exercise execution, movement coordination, timing, and participant motivation to ensure engagement and achieve training goals.
  2. Evaluation and Passing Criteria Students are assessed on program quality, leadership, timing, rhythm, clarity of instructions, and exercise technique.Results are either “Pass” (with possible improvement feedback) or “Fail” for significant errors, poor leadership, or weak group coordination.
  3. Retake Policy Students who fail may retake the exam for $50 per attempt.
  4. The practical final exam can only be taken after completing all theoretical and practical requirements successfully.

Final Grade Calculation

  1. Practical Exam: 50%
  2. Theoretical Exam: 25%
  3. Practical Training: 25%

Students must pass all three components to obtain the certificate. 

All exams must be completed within 45 days from the course start date.

Certificate of Completion

After completing the course and passing all exams, students receive a certificate emailed directly to them and stored in their platform profile, officially accredited by:

  1. Swedish Academy of Sport Training (SAST)
  2. Global Council of Sport Science (GCSS)
  3. International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE)
  4. Register of Exercise Professionals Tunisia (REPS Tunisia) – for Tunisian students
  5. International Confederation of Registers of Exercise Professionals (ICREPs) – for Tunisian students
  6. Ministry of Vocational Training and Employment (MFPE) – for Tunisian students
